The role of music in the Church
I’m no longer a Christian, see Lost and How I went to theology school and lost my faith.
While I don’t think there’s any majesty to honour I don’t think anything I’ve said here is necessarily wrong.
I think that music in many modern churches fills the role once occupied by grand architecture, masterful paintings, beautiful cloth, and a lot of precious minerals.
It honours majesty with beauty and extravagance, it draws people in to worship God, it draws out excellence, and it is quite easy to distract itself into production being its own end.
And I’ve got to admit, it’s not as cool or long-lasting as it’s predecessors.
I don’t have a point, but I’ll publish this anyway in the name of deadlines.
